About the Author

Ian F. Darwin has worked in the computer industry for three decades. He wrote the freeware file(1) command used on Linux and BSD and is the author of Checking C Programs with Lint, Java Cookbook, and over seventy articles and courses on C and Unix. In addition to programming and consulting, Ian teaches Unix, C, and Java for Learning Tree International, one of the world's largest technical training companies.

Waste of paper

I am a long-time reader of O'Reilly books - my shelves are a veritable bestiary, in fact. This book is, without question, the worst text from O'Reilly Media to come into my possession. The quality of the code samples in the book is exceptionally bad: many of the samples will not compile, others contain logic errors which cause them to function incorrectly in ways which are readily apparent if you attempt to use the sample and still others abuse API functions in ways the API documentation specifically says not to do.

The typesetting in the book is pretty bad: code samples do not follow any rules for indentation and even within a single sample it is not uncommon for the indentation to change part of the way through the sample. Likewise there appears to be no overarching rule or guideline which was employed to determine which portions of a sample were selected for selected for inclusion or elision. As such later examples in the book will contain the 'same' AndroidManifest.xml which has been included a dozen times earlier in the book while earlier examples omit important pieces of code.

Ignoring all of the faults above the editorial content is really what sinks this book. Instead of finding experts to contribute to the book the text was crowd-sourced through a wiki -- and it shows. The text is littered with so many comments along the lines of, "I am not sure if my style is better or recommended..." that you quickly find yourself wishing you had purchased a book penned by someone who knew the answer or could give a well-reasoned expert opinion.

Annoyingly the editor selected some of his own examples for inclusion for no apparent reason. As an example, "Designing a Conference/Camp/Hackathon/Institution App" is quite interesting and if it was available as a standalone book in a case-study on Android development I would buy it in a heartbeat. That he gave less than two full pages to such an amazingly broad topic but did not cut it entirely reeks of vanity publishing.

Overall: this book is a bit better than wading through internet how-to sites directly. But not by much.

Shallow and nothing new

I found this book a real disappointment. All chapters that I read were very shallow and provided only the basic stuff that anyone can easily find online. Advanced topics are only briefly touched with the advanced solutions left as an exercise for the reader. As an example: working on a location aware app involves much more sophistication than simply requesting a location update. Yet, the location chapters only covers the basic stuff that helps novices to get their feet wet, not to write a real-world app.

Great, Creative Take on Work in Rhetoric!

In this book, DeLuca says that he aims to "perform a postmodern critical rhetoric" (and he does!) examining "image events" created by environmental activists such as Earth First!, Green Peace, and even more interestingly, anti-pollution activists (very grass roots) in Kentucky. In a nicely scattered array of chapters, DeLuca poses his argument that image events can do things (make change) while also being appropriated and rendered inert in various ways. Reading this book, one can only wonder how it would have been changed if the anti-WTO protests of N30, 1999 would have been considered -- but that is not a shortcoming: the book is thorough and very well written. Great scholarship!

The author explores these image events through the tactics and strategies of radical environmental and environmental justice groups. Expertly, he deconstructs the notion of a public sphere, as grounded in today's televisual mass mediated society. Rebuffing an ideal Habermassian public sphere in which all parties and sides can equally and civilly debate issues of any interest, DeLuca questions whether all individuals are welcome to enter into that debate, a debate which today occurs in the mass media. Looking at four nonviolent environmental and environmental justice groups, DeLuca argues that the success of their protests against hegemonic forces now lies in the image event itself rather than the immediate cessation of the offense in question. Success comes about through a direct action: Forcing people (audiences) out of comfortable ignorance into a questioning of the status quo (pp. 1-3). The violent counterresponses (pp. 8-9) from the corporations and governments being protested, in light of the failed (inability to stop the present offense) direct actions by the environmental groups, underscores the author's contention of the redefinition of success. Through this challenge of the mainstream discourse (industrialism and progress) (p. 6), the direct actions of the groups DeLuca analyzes become symbolically charged, expected to fail in immediate terms. Success instead comes through increased visibility and public support. By challenging the legitimacy of the establishment" (p. 15), the groups are, according to DeLuca, considering "the implications for rhetoric of extralinguistic confrontational activities" (p. 15). To critical rhetorical scholars, DeLuca becomes one of the vanguards who asserts that the visual realm, which has for too long been ignored by the field, is not only as important, but more so than spoken or written rhetoric in the political public sphere. Through this analysis, DeLuca explores how radical environmental groups are reconstituting the identity of the dominant culture (p. 16) rather than forming their own. In conclusion, this work is of great importance to the academy, especially the field of rhetoric. DeLuca's book begins to fill the dearth of work on media and the environment. It begins anew the research of social movements in this postmodern era. Importantly, it gifts the activist groups legitimacy and credence, which does have the potential to greater effect social change, an ideal conditional for every work in the academy.

Good but lacks details of survival experience

I bought this book because I happened to turn on the television and see the author, Juliane Koepcke, being interviewed. The bare bones of her story sounded amazing -- During a storm, the small airplane in which she and her mother were flying broke apart. While still strapped in her seat she fell several *miles* down into the Peruvian jungle. And survived! I had to know more.

As far as it goes, the book is good. The problem is that it doesn't go far enough. The author explains that she was able to survive because her parents were biologists and had taught her about the jungle, where she was raised for much of her life. The tone is matter-of-fact as she describes how she slept through her initial injuries, including a concussion, then got up and walked out of the jungle by following a stream. That was all well and good, but I wanted to know details. Exactly how did she muster the courage to do this? What did she eat? How did she cope with the isolation? The probability that her mother had not survived? Etc., etc.

I suspect that the lack of detail is because all of this happened to Koepcke back in the 1960s, when she was 17 years old. She never wrote about her experience until now, so it seems probable that she might not remember all of the small details that would make her story more compelling. The only reason that she wrote her book now is that she hopes to create a nature preserve in that part of Peru where she lived with her parents and wants visibility for her cause. Nothing at all wrong with that and, in fact, I think it's a great idea. It's just that the book is promoted as a survival story.

To be fair, one could say that the book is really more than a survival story in that Koepcke spends a lot of time talking about the jungle and why it is important to preserve it. She includes some interesting tidbits about the animals, especially the birds, that live there and also writes lovingly of the people and culture of the place. All of this adds enough substance to her story to make it book length, rather than merely a magazine article or television news feature.

Overall, When I Fell From the Sky is a decent read, but if you are looking for a survival story along the lines of Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place, this isn't it.

Incredible survival but story is 90 per cent off subject

Juliane Koepckes survival is one of the most miraculous to ever occur.

From the moment the twin turboprop Lanza passenger plane with ninety two passengers on board runs into a thunderstorm, gets struck by lightning disintegrating as it plummets to earth from two miles above to being found in a loggers hut it is hard to imagine the initial horror and then seemingly impossible predicament a young seventeen year old girl finds herself in.

Having stirred out of unconsciousness Juliane has found herself still strapped in her seat sitting upright and alive but the two adjoined seats next to her were empty (one had been her mothers).

The tree canopy of the jungle had cushioned the impact but she now finds herself alone concussed with a broken colour bone, a gash on her thigh and another in her upper back that later gets maggot infested (although she hadn't realised at the time she had ligament damage and a large splinter in her foot)

She is wearing a thin cotton mini dress, has one sandal on her foot and the glasses she relies on are gone.
A bag of sweets and nothing else.

With the added trauma of not knowing if her mother is alive or dead she wanders off soon discovering other dead passengers stuck head first into the earth still strapped in their seats with their legs in the air.
With these images and thoughts in her head she faces the inhospitable wilderness for the next eleven days.

What you will find in this book in regards to the actual crash and Juliannes survival is pretty thin and is basically covered in not much more than one chapter.

A keen conservationist Julianne had spent much of her childhood in the middle of the Peruvian rainforest where her parents founded a biological research station.
Initially after the accident she'd returned to Germany but her passion for the preservation of the forest and its habitat had become her passion and for someone who hated and tried to shun the publicity surrounding her survival this book is more her vehicle to get her conservation message across.

Unfortunately because Juliannes book is ninety percent not about what book purchasers are likely to expect I will only give it three stars.

It took her many years took to give a clearer picture of her survival a many false accounts by other people and media had been told.

Her delay in not wanting to tell and exaggerate her own story is a sign of integrity with an unselfish agenda being rainforest preservation.

This is not like another so called pumped up jungle survival story by Yossi Ghinsberg where his own contradictory accounts on utube, his book and the television show "I shouldn't be alive" are given as he milks his little misadventure for all the money he can.

Compelling and Revealing

The story follows Juliane, a young woman who really did fall from the sky, through her ordeal in the jungle, as well as her life in the aftermath of this incredible, miraculous survival. WHEN I FELL FROM THE SKY is a rare book because it not only details everything this young woman had to face while in a Peruvian rain forest--called a green hell--but it also explores the effects of survivor guilt, overnight celebrity, and trying to figure out one's place in the world. It's a great read because we see Juliane's struggle internally and externally. A very, very good autobiography that will have you wondering how you would fare in similar circumstances.

About the Author
Jon Cowans is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He received his Ph.D. in History at Stanford University. �Public opinion is a democratic invention.�

Some scholars of public opinion regard public opinion as an ahistorical category. They define public opinion as a force or reputation which influence on the people's conducts (i.e., Noelle-Neumann, even historian Paul Veyne who studied Roman Empire), or on the king's policy against people (i.e., Lowell). Thus, they say that public opinion has existed over there and over time; even in monarchy, king was subject to public reputation. Unfortunately, this kind of idea continuously lingers in current research on public opinion whose analytical object is representative democracy.
In reality, it may be possible that people's idea, opinion, and public expression influenced on those of other people, or of governmental bodies. But, in mentality, public opinion is a peculiar historical phenomenon which emerged with the rise of democratic governance. As Cowans (2001) points out, it is just opinions that have an influence or pressure on the conducts of the people, but it was not public opinion (opinion publique). The transformation of opinion from a pejorative term to a rather positive one is due to opinion's marriage with the qualifier public (Ozouf). The marriage was not, however, made possible not only by the expansion of people's power-namely, the rise of the bourgeois public sphere , as Habermas argues, but also, and more significantly, by the change of political elite's mentality. Methodologically, thus, the origin of public opinion should be found in the discourse (rhetoric) of political elites rather than in hard facts. And the historical studies of French Revolution may provide many insights into our conceptions of public opinion.
