On the Run, by Iris Johansen

For eight years, single mother Grace Archer has been living a picture-perfect life raising her daughter on a horse farm in the small town of Tallanville, Alabama. Watching Frankie grow into a talented and confident young girl has made Grace as happy as any mother could hope to be. Happy enough, even, to forget the past. But the past never quite goes away. Which is why a certain charismatic man also moved to Tallanville eight years ago to watch over her.

But when violence threatens to shatter Grace and Frankie's idyllic home, the waiting is over. The ghosts of the past have returned. And they're hungry for blood. Now Grace must resume an identity she thought she had cast off forever, and match wits with an opponent as deadly as he is cunning. The prize: an extraordinary secret that only she can unfold. The forfeit: losing the thing more precious to her than life itself.

From Publishers Weekly
A single mom and gifted horse handler, Grace Archer goes on the lam with her equally exceptional eight-year-old daughter, Frankie, after a Middle Eastern magnate named Marvot kills the owner of the Alabama horse farm where they have been hiding under the watchful eye of Grace's former employer, the CIA. Johansen (Firestorm, etc.) blends action, suspense and family values as Frankie's father, ex-CIA commando Jake Kilmer, comes back into Grace's life to protect her and the child he has never known. Grace blames Jake for her father's death and the end of her career, but there's no one else she trusts against Marvot, who wants her to train his lethal blue-eyed Arabian stallion and mare, known as the Pair, to lead him to treasure buried somewhere in the Moroccan desert. The novel starts off with guns blazing and doesn't slow down for murder, kidnapping, blackmail, sex or sandstorm. Johansen borrows openly from the movies Hollywood thinks women love (Grace talks to horses, though she balks at being called a horse whisperer), crafts family scenes (Marvot playing chess with his son; the Pair with their colt) and offers a mother and father who defend the world from criminals while yearning for domestic tranquillity. The Johansen formula works so well in this novel that readers may expect a sequel. (Dec.)

From Booklist
The CIA put Grace Archer and her young daughter, Frankie, under protective custody on a small horse farm in Alabama. When their cover is blown, the CIA wants to use Grace and Frankie as bait to smoke out Marvot, an old enemy. The only person who can help is Jake Kilmer, a rogue agent. Years ago, he trained Grace as an operative so that the CIA could benefit from her uncanny talent for handling horses. They wanted to find out why a French Moroccan underworld kingpin wanted to train two beautiful, wild, and extremely dangerous horses known as "the Pair." The mission was a failure, and Grace, then pregnant, went into hiding, distrusting Kilmer, with whom she was having an affair. Now Marvot has put a bounty on Grace and Frankie's heads, wanting to bring them back to Morocco to train the horses. Kilmer wants to kill Marvot and use "the Pair" himself. Frankie trusts Kilmer; now Grace must find out if she can do the same. Johansen gives her readers what they have come to expect from the queen of suspense: a truly evil, skin-crawling villain and complex heroes who must tangle with him in the shadow world of foreign intrigue. I've got to go against the crowd here.
By E. A. Montgomery
I wouldn't call this her best. I wouldn't even put it in the top ten. It's a grab bag of genre cliches loosely held together by momentum with a sub-plot that literally made me say "That's IT?" I mean, seriously - that's the pivotal thing that makes the bad guy hate them and causes everything to roll? Because it's pretty absurd. It's not even suspend your disbelief absurd, it's just cartoonish.

Essentially, you have a Woman On The Run with a Child In Danger and she's been Abandoned By The CIA so only her ExLover The Mercenary can help her, but she doesn't trust him because, well, that's what she does. Suddenly things are exploding, bad guys are proving their oh so bad by threating to sexually assualt children, and the Woman Must Face Down Evil to prevail. Except the evil is so laughably evil that you wonder he survived as long as he did. And the Way She Can Succeed is so implausible that you really can't take it seriously. It requires magic animals and weather shamans.

Iris Johansen writes great thrillers. This one is a misfire. Wait for paperback if you must know and if you haven't read her at all, pick another.

Dreadful book
By ACS
I am constantly amazed at what can get published. The plot of this book requires the reader to suspend any sense of logic and rationality. In fact, the plot is so far-fetched I thought it was a parody. The characters are not believable at all. The reader is supposed to believe that Mozart has been re-incarnated as Frankie. Um right. And I am the queen of Spain. This is the first book by the author that I have read and I am not anxious to pick up another one. I found the plot lines and character developments to be insultingly stupid. Almost too embarassed to donate this book. I pray for the trees sacrificed to make this.

Paranormal twist to this good but not great read
By Valerie Matteson
Grace Archer is a former CIA operative who has been in hiding on Charlie's horse farm in a very small Alabama town. She and her eight year old daughter Frankie are also overseen by Robert Blockman, a CIA operative who lives in the town undercover. The four of them have good times together and have become fast friends over the nearly nine years Grace has been in hiding. Unbeknownst to Grace her former coworker and lover, Jake Kilmer, has stirred up the pot and now the evil Marvot is sending everyone and everything after Grace and her daughter.

Of course the only one that can help them is Jake who is no longer directly or indirectly with the CIA. Grace trusts him to take care of her and Frankie but as for more personal trust--that will take time. Grace has an almost magical way with horses and thus Marvot wants her back in El Tariq to help him with a very special "Pair" of Arabian horses.

I enjoyed the danger, intrigue and adventures and less the "paranormal" aspects of this story although I usually enjoy some paranormal twists but I felt that the story needed more background on how Grace developed/discovered her talent and how she had used it before to help make it more plausible. A fun read nevertheless.

Bobby Fischer, by Harry Benson

Harry Benson’s rare, exclusive photos of the elusive and controversial chess genius Bobby Fischer taken during the historic World Championship chess match in Iceland in 1972 in which Fischer solidly defeated reining champ, Russian Boris Spassky, are collected here for the first time, in Bobby Fischer.

Photographer Harry Benson was one of the very few people Bobby Fischer would talk to during the historic World Championship chess match in Iceland in 1972 in which Fischer solidly defeated reining world champion, Russian Boris Spassky. The match, known at the time as the “Game of the Century,” is now generally considered a battle in the Cold War between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Benson’s exclusive photos of the elusive and controversial chess genius give insight into the private
world of the man Benson calls “the most eccentric and most fascinating person I have ever photographed.”

Benson’s intimate access to Fischer was not the easiest of tasks to accomplish. In fact, Fischer barred the door even when his mother arrived from America. Filled with idiosyncrasies and a complete loner, Fischer is still revered by chess fans around the world and is considered the greatest chess player of all time.

“Mr. Fischer kept a chessboard by his bed, right, just in case he had any ideas during the night.”
Harry Benson, The New York Times

“I got along with Bobby Fischer because I knew nothing about chess. Bobby thought anyone who knew about chess was a moron.”
Harry Benson, Newsweek

“Fischer was notorious for his abrasive manner, but Benson’s pictures get beyond the antagonistic persona, beyond the antics. ‘There was a softness I found in him,’ he reflects.”
TIME LightBox

"Benson’s beautiful and evocative portraits help us recall the titan at his height."
Barnes and Noble Review

Fischer review
By Happy Customer
After a brief delay in receiving the book, it finally arrived. Overall, book is very interesting. It's mainly a "coffee table" book with very little dialogue. Most of the pictures are shot in black and white and have never been seen before. We see Bobby getting ready for matches by boxing, skipping rope, swimming, doing pull ups, lifting a medicine ball and playing ping pong. There's one shot of Bobby holding a Coke cup in one hand and a ping pong paddle in the other giving us the famous "Fischer stare". Very intimidating. Some of the shots are outtakes from the assignment Benson did for the 11-12-71 issue of Life magazine. Oddly, most of the limited color shots are "reversed" which detracts from the picture. (The square in the lower right hand corner of the board should be white, not black. Also, Bobby parts his hair on the left, not the right). I could have also done without the pictures of Bobby in the shower. My favorites are the ones of Bobby at the board with Boris. Bensons point of view is over Boris' right shoulder.
Overall, a good book but the lack of color pictures and the sloppiness in printing them reversed prevent this from being a 5 star book.

I am a photographer and a fan of Chess. This was a fun book for me, I loved the behind the scene stories of two very interesting men Benson and Fischer. I don't think this is the best photo book of Benson's work.

John Van Hamersveld - Coolhous Studio: 50 Years of Graphic Design, by John Van Hamersveld, Coolhous Studio, Shepard Fairey (Foreword)

The exciting visual arc of John Van Hamersveld's long and storied career is encapsulated in Fifty Years of Graphic Design. The book features Van Hamersveld's illustrations, graphic design work and photographs. Amazing anecdotes ranging from his dealings with music executives when designing album covers to getting high with Jefferson Airplane accompany the graphic work, bringing the collection fully to life. In the early 1960s while attending Art Center College of Design by day, he began his professional career as art director of Surfer magazine. By the mid-1960s, Van Hamersveld's ground-breaking promotional poster for the cult surf film The Endless Summer was making the rounds, and a name for its creator in the process. Eventually Van Hamersveld directed his talents toward creating stunning concert posters promoting shows by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Who and more. By the late '60s, John was hired as an art director for Capitol Records where he went on to design 300 album covers, including The Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles, Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones, Skeletons from the Closet by the Grateful Dead, Eat to the Beat by Blondie, and This is What You Want by Public Image Ltd., to name a few. Van Hamersveld's psychedelic renderings, whether for posters or albums, are widely regarded as some of the best of the form, but what readers may be surprised to discover is just how dynamic the rest of his work is; his output as a draftsman, designer and photographer continues to be impressive and compelling.

About the Author
Shepard Fairey rose to fame in the street art community in 1989, when he developed the viral "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" campaign in Providence, RI. Like Taxali, Fairey was heavily influenced by the artists such as Andy Warhol and often incorporates popular culture references in his work. Although he remains deeply engrossed with street art, Fairey has since expanded to oeuvre to include print design and illustration. In 2008, he composed a portrait of Obama that was lauded as "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You'" by Peter Schjeldal and was subsequently used as the cover of Time Magazine's People of the Year Issue for 2008.

Maybe Too Sophisticated For Some...
By Joe Momma
John's personal biography of his works and associations with muscians, other artists and surfers, etc. over his lifetime. I recommend it for those interested in John's career. He is not as well known as a Griffin, or Mouse Studio, or Moscoso. But, he was a force and influence in that world at that place in time.

Love, love this book
By JVH
If you're interested in art, music and American pop culture, you will love it too. Although it looks like it belongs on a coffee table, beautifully illustrated, this is more than a retrospective on John Van Hamersveld's work. He was there in the early days of the who's who from the worlds of both art and music. The book gives you a first-hand account of hanging out with or working with names like Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Peter Max, and Kiss to name a few. He designed the cover for the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" before albums shrank to CD size and his famous poster for "Pinnacle Hendrix" is instantly recognizable. What a colorful life he led in both California and New York as a designer, a photographer and a teacher. His famous "Endless Summer" poster for the movie of the same name dates back to 1966 and, yet, there it was on the set of a TV show in 2013 looking very much at home in the present.

A must have for all designers and illustrators.
By john
This is a stunning book. As a student of Mr. Van Hamersveld's, at CalArts in the 80's, it is of particular interest. It chronicles the legendary design of one of America's preeminent living designers and illustrators. Taking a journey through the timeline of his work, seeing how he was inspired by the world around him, is nothing short of genius. Personally, his work was inspirational as my teacher, and now, continues to be as I travel through my own career. This is a must have for any designer looking for inspiration on how the past leads to the future. Somehow, his work is more relevant today than ever before, and that means something when you see the likes of the famous Endless Summer poster, the cover for Exile on Main Street or his current work for the Venice Art Walk. A true master. A beautiful book.

Good choice to get your feet wet with Flex
By Tariq Ahmed
The first thing that stood out is that it's in color! I love color, especially for technical material it adds a whole extra dimension to the medium and another vehicle by which to communicate. Obviously in code listings it makes the code easier to visually digest and mentally break down what you're seeing, and with screen caps color is so much more appealing.

The dimension of the book is wider that normal, which gives the book an extra wide gutter that the publisher is able to leverage. And leverage they do by making use of it for an assortment of side bars, notes, tips, and blurbs.

So aside from the aesthetics, content of course is the key. The book is aimed at beginners who don't necessarily have any sort of programming background - so the audience that this book would appeal to includes anyone interested in learning more about Flex and if it's the right fit for them; as a quick read (only 304 pages) you can blast through this book in a short amount of time.

Who might those people be? Developers wanting to test the waters with Flex because they had heard good things about it, Flash or Web media designers thinking about getting into the development side of things with Flex, and management level folks looking to explore new opportunities and want to get a barometer reading on what it would take to get into Flex, etc...

The writing style is fairly casual, and you feel like the author is talking to you (as opposed to the feeling of a manual). I think the author does a pretty good job at keeping things high level with enough meat to make the reader feel they're actually being productive as they work through the examples.

So I'd recommend this book to someone who wants to get their feet wet with Flex - someone who may not be fully committed to Flex at this point in time and doesn't want to invest a ton of time yet.

* Difficulty Level: Beginner
* Range of topics: Moderate
* Depth of topics: Light
* Development experience needed: None
* Reading Speed: Fast
* Writing Style: Casual

A great beginning to intermediate Flex 3 book
By Ed_7
I've worked with Flash and ActionScript for a few years, but I'm new to Flex so I purchased three Flex books and I found this one to be the best one. I like how the author has you build smaller applications that work by themselves but also adds more features to them as the book progresses.

There are some minor code issues, but he answered my questions on his website which is one of the best book websites I've seen [...]. All of the source files and the working applications can be viewed on his site.

I also really enjoy the layout of the new Learning series that O'Reilly has been putting out (similar to the Learning ActionScript 3 book). The color coding and pictures are a nice change from the majority of black and white technical books.

Since the focus of this book is Flex and MXML, newer programmers will need to supplement this book with an ActionScript book once they start to build more advanced applications.

Highly recommended for those who are new to Flex.

This is it!
By JT
I have started to read several Flex books in the past. I say "started", because I quickly lost interest. Many times I found myself scratching my head saying "Why would anyone ever do that?"

This book has been an amazing adventure. The examples are relevant, the writing is entertaining without being off topic, and best of all, within the first 5 chapters I knew enough to make a basic Flex website.

If you have some web design experience with html, and css, then I highly recommend this book!
