From Publishers Weekly
Would-be social butterflies will get encouragement but little inspiration from this not quite scintillating self-help primer. Fine, a conversation consultant, insists that small talk is the necessary overture to deeper communication, the key to generating business leads and dates and a pathway to a richer life in which strangers are magically transformed into acquaintances. She covers such cocktail-party conundrums as how to spot "approachable" interlocutors, how to make introductions, how to butt into an intriguing conversation, resuscitate a flagging one and bail out of a boring one, and how to resist one-uppers, know-it-alls, motormouths and other abusers of talk. Given the ingrained human reluctance to talk to strangers, will, not technique, is the real issue. Much of the book is taken up with motivational pep-talks to get readers to initiate contact (one agonizing exercise suggests "walk through the mall and just say hello to ten people as you pass them"); in a world where everyone feels at a loss for words, Fine argues, saying virtually anything makes one a "hero." Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily make one a great conversationalist. The heart of Fine's methodology consists of long lists of icebreakers and inviting questions that she instructs readers to memorize and regurgitate as needed to jump-start and sustain conversations, and these read like rather bad small-talk-dull ("How has the internet affected your life?"), stilted ("Do you have a personal motto or creed?") and awkward ("Describe an embarrassing moment you've had."). Tongue-tied readers can benefit from her pointers and exhortation, but one hopes they will think a little harder before they speak.

From Library Journal
These two books treat similar subjects, but the contrasts are significant. One covers the entire landscape of speaking, whereas the other focuses just on "small talk." The title of Speak from the Heart describes the book's very solid premise. Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and motivational speaker Adubato emphasizes the importance of being genuine as he attempts to cover every conceivable speaking situation, including public speaking, private conversations, group discussions, and listening. He guides readers in the use of eye contact, developing a conversational style, and being comfortable with their message. Despite many charming personal anecdotes and stories drawn from other sources, this book remains a heavy read. Ironically, while Adubato tells us to make a connection with our audience rather than to "cover the material," he does a much better job of covering the material than of connecting. In contrast, Fine fully engages her audience. She involves readers in the discussion and gives lists of lines people can use to start, maintain, or end a conversation. She discusses conversation topics and how to use them and also includes quizzes, throws in a poem, and scatters a few cartoons to break up the text. Originally released as an audiocassette in 1997, this work comes across much like one of her seminars on small talk. The Fine Art of Small Talk does everything that Speak from the Heart says should be done. Adubato's book is best for academic libraries or large public and business libraries. Fine's is a better choice for most public libraries, as well as business libraries. David Leonhardt, Toronto

Smile and initiate the conversation- that's all this book tells you
By Amazon Customer
Let me preface this by saying I'm a professional trainer and facilitator. I purchased this to lead a small group book reading/discussion. Poorly written and says the exact same thing over and over throughout the book - smile, initiate the conversation, looks for others standing by themselves. The icebreaker questions it provides would be awkward for anyone to use. Not worth it at all.

Just what I needed. A perfect book for the type of person who needs specific examples of what to say.
By C. Bassett
Seems like other books in this genre assume there is some level of social competence in the reader. Which, I suppose there might be some use to that, but this does not make that assumption. This book is just what I needed. Specific examples, specific suggestions to say, It has already helped me to make small talk. I just had to memorize a few phrases she suggested to get things going, and other phrases for what to say when the conversation has hit a dead spot, and the rest of the conversation takes care of itself.

How to face social functions without a stiff drink
By St. Omer Van Matzah
This book has been most helpful to me. I hate public functions due to the witless small talk I am subjected to. I love to listen to people's stories when we can move beyond the mundane, but have wondered how to move women beyond their current diet or workout regimen, addictions or my Super Child's life long accomplishments.(Potty training is boring after 3 minutes and your grandchild's 10 knock knock jokes...please ) It is nice to know what is an appropriate subject to introduce. Although this book is more geared to work related gatherings, how to prep for the onslaught is universal. Lots of good pointers in an easy to use format. Thank you Debra Fine.

The Investigation, by Philippe Claudel

A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year

The Investigator, a humble and ordinary man, has been ordered to conduct an Investigation into a series of suicides that have taken place at the Enterprise—a huge, sprawling complex in an unnamed Town. But the Investigator’s train is delayed. When he finally arrives, no one is there to meet him at the station. When he reaches the Enterprise, he is denied entrance. The harder the Investigator tries to fulfill his task, the more senseless obstacles he encounters: regulations hamstring him, street layouts befuddle him, and—perhaps most unnervingly—he senses someone watching and recording his every movement. In this highly original and absorbing work, Claudel turns his masterful storytelling toward a sweeping critique of the contemporary world. Like Kafka, Beckett, and Huxley, Claudel’s dark fable shows that the most looming questions of our time can only be countered with piercing intelligence and considerable humor.

“Impressive . . . a self-aware book about self-awareness, about the process of becoming a person, the search for self. . . . [Claudel] has managed a rare trick.” —The Daily Telegraph (London)

“Darkly comic, pleasingly strange.” —The Daily Beast

Wonderfully told allegory
By A. Allen
Review based on ARC.

Yup. I really liked this one. So I started reading it, and then kept reading it, and kept reading it, until I was about a third of the way through and realized i was starving. So we went to go eat.

Then I went home and kept reading it.

And here's where it gets trippy. Admittedly, I was exhausted... just... so .... tired. But, see, I kept reading. And I started questioning reality, and my existence, and WHY is that light so bright... and who's keeping my husband away from me? AM I real? What's happening?...

and, normally, I'm not that kind of girl... ;)

Then I was interrupted and was not able to finish until the following evening. Overall, I was very pleased with the book.

And, gosh, what's it about. It is almost an everyman type of story... the characters are identified by their duties. And the Investigator is sent to Investigate an unusual circumstance with the Enterprise. There are, to say the least, obstacles in his efforts to uncover the truth he was sent to investigate. I think I can safely say, just read it. I hate spoilers, especially any hints regarding this kind of book.

But I will say, there are the "surreal" aspects that other mention; it's just that it's more than that. It's an allegory and a warning, and a tale to which many of us can relate. Plus it's creative and thoughtful.

Interestingly, my break in reading the novel occurs around the same time as the Investigator's.... ah, discovery of sorts. The tone seemed to shift. It had a satisfying end. But it just wasn't perfect.

But I Definitely recommend the book.
Definitely.
(four and a half stars)

A Hysterical and Bleak View of Life
By Holly Weiss
The Investigator, an average man like a million others, finds himself in a dystopian, unnamed city. His mission: to investigate twenty suicides. What he encounters is vastly different than anything he can imagine.

The Investigation: A Novel is a bizarre and oddly entertaining book. The reader is quickly swept into a bleak, confusing experience that mirrors the dark side of our existence. The Investigator's frustration in his attempts to do his job pours over the pages of the book. Claudel brilliantly reveals the bureaucracy and absurdity of the nightmare The Investigator finds himself in. The writing is full of pessimism and whimsy. The reader can imagine herself in this bleak dilemma and laugh at herself at the same time. Frustrations with erratic vending machines, stuck restroom hand towel rollers and dead cell phones give the farce a humanity we can relate to. Society functions in The Enterprise, but no real interpersonal relationships exist. Anonymity and lack of emotion pervade the society.

The poor Investigator is foiled on every turn. Random bizarre events happen constantly. He checks into a hotel and has his identification papers confiscated. He never can get his clothes dry. A spa-like bathroom pumps only boiling water. He crashes into a wall after following a green "life line." He is served gourmet breakfast in the midst of massed, hungry Displacees. All the while, he feels he is being watched, but doesn't know why or by whom.

The author manipulates words with suppleness and simplicity. The book is a fast read. Descriptions are well cast. "It wasn't really cold, but the humidity acted like an octopus whose slender tentacles managed to find their way into the tiniest open spaces between skin and clothing."

Born in 1966, Philippe Claudel is a novelist and lecturer at the University of Nancy. His fourteen novels have been translated into various languages. Americans will recognize him from the 2008 film he wrote and directed, I've Loved You So Long, starring Kristin Scott Thomas. John Culline translated the highly original The Investigation from the French.

It is hard to distinguish if Claudet is merely playing with our minds or means the book to be allegorical. The reader finds herself doubting her perception of what she is reading around page 180. This may be a purposeful joke on the author's part. The reader, however, can identify with The Investigator's attempts to escape the diabolical nightmare his world has become.

The Investigation: A Novel is a highly original book recommended for those who enjoy Kafka, Huxley, dystopia and societal commentary.

The Investigation
By Steven Davis
The Investigator considers himself "a scrupulous, professional, careful, disciplined, and methodical person who didn't allow himself to surprised or bothered by the circumstances or individuals he was required to encounter." Therefore, when he arrives at the City to conduct his investigation at the Enterprise, and no one meets him at the train station, he waits with perfect patience despite the miserable weather. Eventually, however, he gives up and, finding no cab in sight--indeed not a human soul or vehicle--he makes his way on foot.

The poor Investigator suffers one mishap after another. He is drenched, his clothes are ruined, he catches cold, and when he finally comes upon a gate to the Enterprise it is the middle of the night and he is rudely sent away. When he eventually finds a hotel, his misfortunes only deepen. The rude Giantess takes and loses his identification, the Waiter gives him nothing fit to eat, the Tourist spills scalding coffee all over him, and the Policeman accuses him of vandalizing the ladies' room!

Gradually, however, this novel that starts as a slapstick comedy begins to morph into a surreal, irrational nightmare. The City and the Enterprise are not part of our world as we know it, or perhaps they are a perfect depiction of our world as we refuse to accept it. The Investigator cries out for answers:

"I'm tossed back and forth, bashed around, bruised and then petted, knocked over and then stood upright again. I'm placed and displaced. I'm forbidden to cross a street and then I'm led across it. I'm smiled upon, I'm embraced, I'm cheered, only to be dashed the next minute against a wall."

But in return he is castigated for his insistence upon identifying people by their function:

"You deny all humanity in yourself and those around you. You see people and the world as an impersonal, asexual system of functions, of cogs and gears, a great mechanism without intelligence in which these functions and cogs operate in order to make it work."

The author calls into question the very idea that organization is essential to society. "Man created order at a time when nothing was required of him. He thought himself clever. He's had cause to regret it."

The Investigation is a philosophical novel that challenges the need for philosophy. The human mind didn't evolve as a tool for understanding the secrets of the universe, says the author, so why does man "constantly fool himself into thinking his mind can grasp everything and comprehend everything?"

"...thinking is sometimes like running an empty washing machine: The exercise may serve to verify proper functioning, but the dirty laundry left outside the machine stays dirty eternally."

The Investigation is a wonderfully entertaining, unsettling, and thoughtful novel that takes the reader on a journey from the funny, through the absurd, to the profound.

Raw spectacle
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo1BI7QUY685PCA]]It's a great idea to release a penciled version of graphic novel once in a while.

Batman: Hush Unwrapped Deluxe is basically the same book as Batman: Hush with dialogue and all, except everything is in pencils. The only coloured bits are the sound effects and Batman's internal narration.

Reading the book in just pencils is quite a different experience. It's basically like looking at the final draft of the book before the go ahead for inking. If you're marveled by Jim Lee's art in the coloured edition, you'll be blown away by this edition - if you're a comic artist maybe your brain will explode with awe.

Every page is filled with detailed pencil work, deserving a slow peruse. The amazing pencil hatches and shading are everywhere, on the characters, the backgrounds. After reading the book, you'll probably get a new sense of appreciation for comic artists and the art of making comics. This book is definitely a collectors' edition for fans.

As for the story, the storytelling is good and well paced, there are some surprises as Batman tried to uncover who this Hush villain is. The characters are well defined and believable. The sequences with Catwoman are fantastic - I love how Catwoman and Batman interacts.

However, I've a problem with the ending. Even though the villain was revealed in the end, the motivation for going against Batman isn't, or is too weak for me to notice. Just because you're a bad guy and he's Batman means you've to go against him? So the story is great for me until the ending which I felt could be better.

Also check out Icons: The DC Comics & Wildstorm Art of Jim Lee if you can't get enough of the art.

Excellent Opportunity to view Jim Lee's process-
By Nathaniel P Wieselquist
This is much more than an "Absolute" DC version, as it gives you all of Jim Lee's pencil work pre-Colorist. If you're at all interested in viewing the process at work, this is a must-have. I've often seen a few pages dedicated to this in special edition stuff, but this is the ENTIRE BOOK. Won't replace the original, very nice as an addition.

Very Cool-Looking Raw Jim Lee's Pencils
By Hengky Tanoyo
Honestly speaking, I don't think I will ever consider Batman: Hush to be a good story arc. I mainly bought the original colored version for Jim Lee's artwork. I mean who wouldn't be excited for a Jim Lee's Batman. Of course, a solid story would've been a great bonus. But not here, the storyline is pretty much an excuse for Jim Lee to draw most of Batman's rogue gallery. Joker, The Riddler, The Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, even Superman are featured here. And the titular new villain character Hush has really one of the most convoluted backgrounds among Bat-villains (not in a good way). There is really no character study nor deep here. It's just Batman and his sidekicks in one visually stunning situation after another. If you're looking for solid storytelling, look elsewhere.

That being said this Hush: Unwrapped edition is really the kind of book that I'd been waiting for. Being an aspiring penciler and line art afficionado myself, it is just very inspiring to see how painstaking and richly detailed Lee's penciled pages are. I could spend hours and hours just savoring the art. I still love the colored comic books but I do hope there would be more books like this in the future. I hope Marvel can follow suit. I mean, for a teasing, how about a Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man: Torment being published in this format? Or Jim Lee's X-Men works? Fingers crossed on those.
