Excellent introduction and review

The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.
The breadth of material covered is excellent, making it especially appropriate as an introductory or intermediate text. Of particular interest will be the section of the book on "The Science of Public Health Informatics" which includes particularly fine chapters on information architecture, value assessment, management of personnel and projects, and organizational change. Bill Yasnoff does a particularly good job adding clarity to a muddled domain in a chapter on privacy, confidentiality, and security of Public Health Information. Those readers generally interested in PHI education, or with specific interest in developing training programs for PHI programs or for public health agency personnel would find great value in Janise Richard's chapter on core competencies.
The writing style is generally clear and illustrative, albeit not terribly concise. We have adopted this book as the core text for our graduate-level introductory course in PHI.

Very in depth coverage of PHIs. The book is a little short on algorithms and comprehensive coverage of databases. This book has a place in every Public Health Library and will be definitive for years to come. The second edition should be released in a couple of years.

Good foundation for PHI graduate certificate course

I use this book for a public health informatics course I teach and it serves the purpose very well. The students are mostly public health looking for informatics knowledge. Used with more recent material from the web, it provides a good foundation in the field. It is getting a bit long in the tooth tho - 10 years old now. It would be really nice if an updated edition were to be published.

About the Author
Steven J. Heine is Professor of Social and Cultural Psychology and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on meaning, genetic essentialism, and cultural influences on motivations. He has published over seventy articles in such periodicals as Science, Nature, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Psychological Review. He received the Distinguished Scientist Early Career Award for Social Psychology from the American Psychological Association in 2003 and the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology in 2011. He lives with his family in Vancouver.

An excellent review

The books about biological basis of behavior are presently very popular. However, this book shows how interesting and important cultural differences are. Though this book is scientifically up-to-date, it is clearly written and relativelly easy for those, too, who have only a little knowledge of psychology. To give an example: though happiness does have a marked genetic component, the differences between countries are very large. Silmilarly many common psychological disorders in Western countries are quite rare in some other parts of the world. I recommend this book highly. This is also an excellent course book for any university or college.

Cultural psychology is a great book to enter the fascinating world of how culture shapes the way think and the way we act. Many questions can have a cultural explanation, such as:
- why does the US South seem so much violent than the North?
- how does culture shape our parenting decisions?
- are your self-concept and motivation related to the culture you live in?
- is your perception of what is fair and just a consequence of your beliefs or your culture's?
- to what extent is your thinking style influenced by your cultural environment?
Even health is affected by culture. Incredibly, there are mental conditions that are virtually nonexistent in Western societies, whereas others, such as depression, can manifest differently in Eastern cultures. Psychology itself, which was mainly conceived in the West, may not be as helpful in Asian countries.
There are so many aspects of our lives that are governed by culture and amazingly, this explanation had been neglected for centuries. It wasn't until the 1950's that this interesting field began to show its results.

Pride of Imperial Russia - made in USA

Excellent books with short histories and superb artwork of the subject ship. Individual books have additional material such as scale drawings and some have 3D content complete with glasses for viewing them. Superb for both content artwork and general appearance, these books bring the subject vehicle back to life in all their magnificent detail. Great for modeling, general information or simple viewing. Very pleased with the product and content. This edition has much bonus content - 1/77 and 1/350 scale drawings and profile poster.

Welcome title dealing with an earlier ship

This is the eighth offering in Kagero's "Super Drawings in 3D" series. So far all have dealt with warships that fought in the Second World War. This title is a welcome deviation from that pattern. It depicts a Russian protected cruiser built in the US around the turn of the century.

The format of these books is straightforward. There are a few pages of text and tables and the rest of the book consists of views of the ship which has been reproduced in a 3D computer aided design software package. In this particular instance the text is particularly well done going into some detail about the ships origins, construction, and service history. The computer drawings are superb as usual. A disconcerting feature to me is the lime green hull anti fouling paint instead of the usual red. The book also features two paintings of the the ship on the first and last pages. Finally, there are two unbound foldouts. One has more computer images while the other is conventional line drawings.

The book is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", 52 page, stapled card cover. Like the others in this series the production values are first rate. Modellers will be in heaven, general enthusiasts will be pleased also.

Invaluable for the Model Builder

This is the the reference for those executing a model of the 1898 Protected Cruiser Varyag. Well printed, very clear, there is a photo in here somewhere to show every detail you seek.

Is it absolutely accurate? I don't know. I think Artworks may have used this book in forming their resin and brass variation on the Zvezda kit, so it sure is useful if you are building that!

The separate diagram poster, which includes 1/700 and 1/350 scale drawings, is worthy of framing (as well as useful).
