Excellent study guide as long as you have the right materials

I used this to study for my CPT exam, and there are a few things I noticed in the other reviews that I feel the need to correct.

This book does NOT contain most of the information you need. It contains a list of REFERENCES TO information you need to know. (Pointers, for your programmers.) You will need to buy (or have existing knowledge of the information from) the following books for the CPT exam:

1. ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer - This book goes over the basics of exercise physiology and some testing methods. If you are not currently studying or have not studied Exercise Science (or the equivalent), this is a must-have.
2. ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription - This book details the steps and information necessary to understand exercise testing and prescription. I personally studied the most from this book, since my Ex Sci coursework from college only briefly touched upon this material.
3. ACSM's Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual - This book contains several extremely valuable testing methods, as well as the largest collection of norm charts out of any other ACSM publication (including blood testing norms, which come up a LOT in the CPT exam).

There is some basic information in this book, but the vast majority of information is contains in other ACSM publications. If you are looking to go for certification, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE OTHER MANUALS. You CANNOT study exclusively from this text and expect to pass the test. Additionally, the exam is not all memorization as the practice test may lead you to believe. There are several case studies that have you apply the principles of risk stratification, testing, and basic prescription.

Not very helpful, a bit misleading on ease.

Though this book has received good reviews, I did not find the book to be very helpful in preparation for my HFS exam. As another review stated, the put the CPT, HFS, and CES study guides together, which stinks if you only need one of them. It was helpful to look at other portions of exams, since some of the certifications go over the same information.

I was very frustrated to not find any information about the newer format and percentage distribution with the HFS exam, so I was hoping this book could help me in preparing for the new management piece that counts for 15% of the total score. I felt that the case studies presented for different sections were very simple compared to the ones that are given to you on the exam. I also was not expecting much EKG material, but there were about 4-5 questions on different cardio topics, which is not covered within the HFS case studies.

I gave the book 2 out of 5 stars because I don't think it is very necessary for success on the exam. There was also a couple of typos within the practice exam questions (much easier than the true exam, BTW), which to me is unacceptable. There was a question about what qualifies HDL to be a risk factor, and ACSM put

So far, this has been a tremendous help in studying for the certification exam. It covers all three exam types with explanations of answers, location of where to find the sources and other important information, and in depth questions that are key to the life like application in the field.

Gitanjali (Bengali: গীতাঞ্জলি) is a collection of poems by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The original Bengali collection of 157 poems was published on August 14, 1910. The English Gitanjali or Song Offerings is a collection of 103 English poems of Tagore's own English translations of his Bengali poems first published in November 1912 by the India Society of London. It contained translations of 53 poems from the original Bengali Gitanjali, as well as 50 other poems which were from his drama Achalayatan and eight other books of poetry — mainly Gitimalya (17 poems), Naivedya (15 poems) and Kheya (11 poems).

Songs of Kabir is a 1915 book consisting of 100 poems of Kabir, the 15th-century Indian poet and mystic, translated to English by Rabindranath Tagore. In this book Kabir has combined the philosophies of Sufism and Hinduism. The book had an introduction by Evelyn Underhill and was published by Macmillan, New York. This book has been translated to Persian and Kurdish by Leila Farjami and Sayed Madeh Piryonesi, respectively.

New English translations of Songs of Kabir is done by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra ."It is Mehrotra who has succeeded in capturing the ferocity and improvisational energy of Kabir’s poetry".

The translations were often radical, leaving out or altering large chunks of the poem and in one instance fusing two separate poems (song 95, which unifies songs 89,90 of Naivedya). The translations were undertaken prior to a visit to England in 1912, where the poems were extremely well received. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English Gitanjali.

The English Gitanjali became very famous in the West, and was widely translated.[3] The word gitanjali is composed from "gita", song, and "anjali", offering, and thus means – "An offering of songs"; but the word for offering, anjali, has a strong devotional connotation, so the title may also be interpreted as "prayer offering of song".

Fascinating Research, A Must Read Series!

What is the Wave? According to the author, a hypothetical 'quantum wave collapse' that will drastically alter life on Earth. In my opinion, the finest work by this author, The Wave holds nothing back. Aliens, History, Monsters, Quantum Physics, God, the Origin of Life on Earth, Why we are here, it's all in these eight books. They form a primer that allows your mind to take off and explore previous regions of thought you never may have known existed!

The series forms a picture that everyone on earth should at least consider openly, and reject only with solid data.

Her citations and methods of research are incredible, attempting 'superluminal' communication in a way never done before - scientifically! And following clues given from the experiment she tracks all sorts of fantastic ideas and theories that may hold the key as to why we are here and what we should be doing.

Recommended to anyone who can has an open mind and an edge for the mysterious.

Wave series 1-8, Vol 3

Ok, this one I find the best, only because of the overlay of the entire 'show' of creation that is put forth, the much 'bigger picture' if you well. It is part of the ongoing 'wave' series, currently 8 volumes in length, as the author shares with the reader her esoteric self-discovery of truth. It utilizes the channeled version of her own 'guidance', her subconscious, higher self or whatever you want to call spirit.

If you've come across this series, you are in questioning mode or have stepped deep in the doo-doo and I would suggest you get out quickly. The Matrix is not made to be known to most people, awakening is a right of passage that few can survive successfully, so if in doubt, run don't walk. The truth can be quite scary at times, especially if one is alone and in the dark without any knowledge to light the way.

This book series is such a light, if you are ready for it, but like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I would suggest you not pull back that curtain on the hidden man behind it unless you want to take a ride through the unknown like she did.

Short, but very interesting reading

Here is the story of mankind's first, and unsuccessful, attempt to colonize another planet.

A dozen slow, multi-generation ships were sent to a distant star system called the Leffer System. Soon afterwards, mankind developed a star drive, so that by the time the ships reached their destination, mankind had been traveling around the galaxy for a hundred years. Of the dozen ships, two arrived empty, and two others never arrived at all. The ships were simply parked in orbit, and abandoned. Beta-2, one of the ships, even has its own ballad. Years later, as a college assignment, Joneny, a young researcher, is sent to find out just what happened.

Several of the supposedly indestructible ships show evidence of huge internal explosions. Some old audio recordings talk of being attacked by some sort of green humanoid that communicates by telepathy. Joneny meets the humanoid's half-human son, who is able to exist slightly outside of time, and live in hard vaccuum with no problem at all. He watches video from the other ships where the inhabitants have physically, and mentally, de-evolved to the level of an early human. "The Norm" is taken very seriously on the ships. If a person was found to be outside physical norms in any way, whether it's being too tall, or left-handed, or having the "wrong" eye color, they were immediately executed. By the end, Joneny understands just what The Ballad of Beta-2 is all about.

This is a short novel, but a very good one. It's an interesting story about how things on a multi-generation ship can go very wrong, and it's worth reading.

Hard to find but worth hunting down.

I was looking for The Ballad of Beta-2 and Empire Star, a two-in-one Delany title that does not seem to be on amazon. I agree with the other reviewer: Ballad of Beta-2 is a quick and interesting mystery, highly recommended. The other tale that it is bound with, in my copy, Empire Star, is more complex (and not as haunting), but still a rewarding bit of short Delany SF. Delany can be very bizarre (as in Dhalgren) but he can also write good old-fashioned SF. !

An old friend, revisited

I read Delany's books when they first came out in the late 60's, and have always remembered "The Ballad of Beta 2" as one of my favorites. It must have really resonated with me, as even today I can hear the song that's central to the plot in my head. I reread this just a few months ago and I recaptured that sense of wonder I had as a teenager. That's the sign of a keeper as far as books go.
