This beginning text has been written for students of architecture, building construction, and related technologies. It is intended to provide the material for a first course in structures, treating the essential topics in statics and mechanics of materials and providing an introduction to structural analysis. The presentation is basically quantitative, and it will be most effective when used in conjunction with a book emphasizing a qualitative approach to structural behavior.

It is assumed that the student has a background in materials and methods of construction from prior coursework or individual experience. Chapter 5 provides a very brief review of the essential characteristics of a few structural materials but is not sufficient in either depth or scope.

A minimal background in calculus and physics has also been assumed for students of this material. Most derivations of the equations have been placed in the appendices, because they usually are not absolutely essential to the use of the equations themselves. Better students, however, will gain additional understanding and insight by consulting these derivations as they are referenced.

As with previous editions, all sections contain examples and problems using both SI and customary units. It is hoped that instructors will be able to use either system with minimal confusion. I do not recommend using a mix of units during the first course in structures, because it might hinder the proper understanding of "first principles" that is so essential to the student's future study and practice. My school, for example, teaches the first course exclusively in SI units and the remaining ones in customary units.

Chapter 1 has been revised and expanded to include additional material regarding why architects must be well versed in the science and art of structural behavior as well as to include some guidelines concerning structural system selection. I think teachers sometimes forget how complex this subject appears to the beginner, and how easy it is to get overwhelmed by the introduction of so many new (and, at first, seemingly unrelated) concepts. Chapter 1 should be read at the outset and then more thoroughly discussed after the study of equilibrium, bending, buckling, and other topics.

By expressed demand, Chapters 2 and 12 hake been expanded to include additional material on graphical statics. Section 2.17 treats the graphical analysis of some relatively complicated structures and was placed in this chapter because it is statics, but I recommend treating this material after covering the graphical solution of trusses in the new Section 12.3. I usually treat trusses near the end of the first semester, because I believe that trusses are not "simple structures" and that their behavior can be understood best after bending and buckling have been discussed. This approach also has the positive feature of bringing the student back to a consideration of basic equilibrium principles after a possible period of reduced emphasis.

Sometimes the answers in the back of the book are wrong. Makes you double check. Overall good and standard book. Nice blurbs on real architects and buildings used.

There has to be better

The Drawings aren't to scale, examples are confusing, the author skips steps and takes shortcuts , and then the steps he does take he doesn't explain "why" the steps are taken. In my opinion, much of statics should be taught in the same way that geometry proofs were taught. While it may be redundant going over the logic behind each step over and over again, it reinforces the methodical employment of concepts necessary to solve the problems. But my biggest gripe with this text book is the writing style. He seems to think that describing an equation or graph is explaining it.

Hard to Follow

Had this book for a Construction Management course. The book does a poor job at explaining concepts. The examples in the book are often very hard to follow. I would not recommend this book to anyone not already familiar with engineering concepts. The book was the required text for my course, which turned out to be pretty painful, mostly because the text was so hard to follow. Most students in the course had to rely on YouTube videos to explain the concepts presented in the text.

Grade 2-4?Daly bases his retelling on a legend told by Elphinstone Dayrell in Folk Stories from Southern Nigeria West Africa, (Green & Co., 1910; o.p.). The social customs of the Ibibio tribe are manifested in the tale of the Sun's insistent invitation to the Sea to come visit his home in order to return her hospitality. When the Sea arrives, with all her children in tow, the Sun and Moon, flooded out of their house, are forced to live in the sky. Daly's version is more sophisticated than the original; his Moon is a materialistic wife who, annoyed with her husband's foolishness, flees to "the dark side of time, where Sun and Moon never meet." Framed cartoonlike watercolor illustrations in shades of blue, brown, and rust on cream-colored backgrounds show indications of the Earth's beginning (a rainbow with dove and hands reaching from the sky, a large egg hatching, a dinosaur feeding at a tree) mingled with details reminiscent of the Renaissance period in the Sun's house. Blair Lent's illustrated edition of the original Dayrell tale (Houghton, 1990) is a more authentic representation of Nigerian folklore with illustrations indicative of African culture.?Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

Ages 4^-7. Daly takes a familiar bibio (Nigerian) folktale and reinterprets it using some unusual, very appealing illustrations. Sun, an adventurous roamer, lives on earth with Moon, a domestic homebody. Sun invites Sea and all her children to visit, but Sea floods the house, causing great distress for Moon. The flooding forces Sun and Moon into the sky, where they have been to this day. Daly's watercolor illustrations personify Sun and Moon as lord and lady of the manor, with Renaissance images (astronomical and otherwise) adding a sense of play and personality. Daly uses a palette of muted golds and blues, and has framed the images with lines of burnt sienna. Although the illustrations do not reflect the culture of the tale's origin, the sophisticated imagery is sure to "amuse the gods and entertain the reader." The size and format make the book acceptable for reading aloud to groups, but the details of the pictures demand a closer look. No specific source notes are given. Janice Del Negro

A Great Children's Book

Synopsis: This folktale explains how the sun and moon became part of the sky. The story begins by explaining how the sun and moon lived together on the Earth in a large and beautiful home. The sun would travel the earth, and during his travels he befriended the sea and invited her to visit him and the moon at their home. The moon was a homebody who liked to be amongst her prized possessions. The sea eventually visits them, bringing along with her all the contents of the sea, her children. As the sea and her children engulf the sun and moon's home, both entities take refuge in the sky to keep from drowning. The moon is extremely upset with the sun's foolish decision to invite the sea to their house, and she decides to live on the dark side of the universe to avoid contact with the foolish sun.

Evaluation: The story begins with a citation, written by the author, explaining that this story originated from a Nigerian myth. The plot of this story is simple; the impulsive sun ruins his home by inviting the sea for a visit. He is not aware of the sea's size and believes the sea and all her children will fit comfortably inside his rather large home. The language is vivid and expressive. The sea is described as having "liquidy dances." The text describes the moon "turning blue" over the thought of the sea and all her children visiting her finely decorated home. A theme does emerge from the telling of this story. The sun was too prideful, believing his house was bigger than the sea. His miscalculation cost him his home and his partner, the moon. Also, the sun had an opportunity to ask the sea to leave before his home was destroyed, but pride prevents him from turning the sea and all her children away. Children will learn that pride can have consequences. The story conforms to western norms. Although it is a Nigerian tale, the language does not depict this culture in any way. The illustrations are whimsical and child friendly. Primary age children will enjoy the story. One activity that could accompany this story would be for children to create their own mythical story explaining how some force of nature came to be. This tale provides a humorous and entertaining reason for the sun and the moon.

Beautifully told, beautifully executed

This is a book that succeeds for children and adults. The artwork is unique and reminiscent of both Renaissance works as well as children's books of the 1940s. The story is simple, well-told and to the point. It highlights both the value of hospitality and the price of vanity. Highly recommended.

About the Author
DB Burkeman fell in love with stickers and street art at an early age via skateboarding and punk rock, but made a name for himself DJing between his homes in London and New York.

Monica LoCascio is an independent curator for several New York and Philadelphia based galleries as well as designer and editor of several art book titles. She is currently Production Director of Paper magazine.

Shepard Fairey is an artist and graphic designer who is known around the world for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign and the Barack Obama "Hope" poster.

A new look on art..?

I won't lie I was just interested in it for the stickers, but after reserching a little on the book I found it is really informative. I have seen these images everywhere, but didn't know what they were or what they ment. I really like all media of art work and I never thought that stickers could be contemporary art, but it really is. This was a great find of a book! Thank you.

This isn't a sticker bomb type book. There are very few actual stickers. Rather, this is a survey of the sticker scene over the last few decades. There's profanity and some soft-core stuff over maybe 15% of the book. But if you can't handle this, then what are you doing looking at a book called "Stuck Up Piece of Crap" in the first place. To me, this is a badass coffee table book for people into provocative street art from the 80s forward. Maybe you were lured in by Fairey, Banksy, et al...but there are so many genius artists in here. This book is a true inspiration and one of my favorites to just pick up and leaf through. If you're an artist, you should probably just get this now.

A great resource

This text book is a wonderful resource for all wanting to learn more about economics in the international arena. It is packed full of facts, graphs, and explanations. One problem I did find in this book is that it tried cover too broad a field. If it would have concentrated on one specific topic like the international economics, and left out the finance, it could be a much stronger work. I grew tired of hearing "as you already know..." It could have not made so many assumtions about what students already knew and used the extra area to cover them. All in all, it was a helpful resource for extra learning, however, I would suggest looking further for a book that will stand alone in teaching an international economics course.

This book could be really good if you just need it to reference information that you may need for a research project. The quizzes are not as simple because you can't find the answer in the book. I believe the author should look at this material more closely because it's not helpful to students. If you are considering economics as your major, you may think again after using this book.

Finding "Home"

This is a sweet story about a teenage mother, Bridget, who is kicked out of her father's home, is rejected by the boy she thought loved her, but finds support and love with strangers who become her new "family." This is also a story about a restless man, Billy, who finds his purpose in life when he meets Bridget. Life has many twists and turns before they acknowledge what everyone else seems to know: Billy and Bridget love each other. The author tells the story from Billy's and Bridget's perspective in separate chapters and through flashbacks. I gave this a three stars because there were times where I just wanted to get to the end of the story...seriously 18 years of friendship fraught with sexual tension was nearly too much. If you want a sweet story this one is for you!

Not terrible but...
Please edit this. Watch out for homonyms.
The plot was sweet enough but there really was no tension or suspense. The shifts in viewpoint were handled adequately but the constant jumping around in time was not. It was as each flashback scene was on a sheet of paper and the haphazardly drawn out of a hat. And finally a sixteen year old becomes a mother but there's very little mention of nerves and doubts and struggles. There's some potential so two stars.

Good storyline, interesting read, just a little confusing....

Wish there were half stars because this should be 3 1/2 stars. It was a great storyline but confusing to read. There is a chapter of "before" and then a chapter of "after/now"... and back you go to youth and then now 18 years later, adults. I can't imagine, for the life of me, that any guy waits for a girl to grow up, raise a child, to confess his love to that girl that he adores; that being said, he dates and sleeps with various women and she dates and sleeps with various boyfriends. They love each other from afar for years and years. It was a good love story but I got a bit tired of the back and forth and then we never got to hear what Katie thought when she discovered who her biological father was. Oh, that's right, I have to read the next book! A guy who refused to help the young girl when she discovers she is pregnant, walks out of the hospital when he hears she is delivering his child, moves on to a wife and kids, but now wants to get to know the daughter he wanted aborted. Yah, that gave me a chill!
