Western Christians may feel safe from being called to die for their faith, but Hovey (adjunct professor at the University of Redlands and Fuller Theological Seminary) explores the Gospel of Mark to find evidence that every church is meant to be a martyr-church. For Hovey, all Christians [should] refuse to relegate the threat of martyrdom to the fringes of history or remote parts of the globe. A martyr-church is one in which members acknowledge the essential opposition of the church to the world and the possibility that they, too, may die in Christian witness. In a dense theological inquiry, Hovey uses the events in Mark to demonstrate that martyrdom is an inextricable feature of the Christian message. Hovey's inaccessible writing doesn't draw on the lived experiences of actual Christians in danger or analyze the differing relations between the church and the principalities and powers around the world. By not engaging nonspecialist readers or considering the real-life contexts of martyrdom, Hovey has probably limited his book's appeal to fellow theologians. (Feb.)

interesting ideas but a real slog of a read

I bought the book after hearing the author speak in person because I found his take on the Gospel of Mark to be very intriguing. This book explores those ideas and has given me new perspectives to consider. But, the writing style is a real challenge to say the least. Be prepared for long, twisted sentences with negative clauses, as well as double negatives. Lots of 'em. This is very frustrating because I needed to reread many passages several times to understand what the author was trying to say, but just a few paragraphs later I sometimes lost him again.

Kindle edition is limited, and it's a bad textbook overall.

The author (or perhaps publisher) have limited the kindle edition licenses to only 2 devices. I like to be able to view e-textbooks on my phone, tablet and laptop so that I can more easily complete readings and assignments on the go, so having to pick 2 of these 3 was aggravating.

As for the more important issues, content and presentation, this textbook leaves much to be desired. It is riddled with typos, which is frustrating, but even more worrisome is the presence of serious bias. The textbook uses point/counter point articles to discuss issues like the benefits/detriments of globalization. Unfortunately, many of these are designed with one point being populated exclusively with 'straw man' arguments. This thread of misrepresenting complex issues arises outside of flawed pseudo-debates as well. Much better alternatives are available.

International Business Yay!

This purchase was for a requirement for my college course. It is certainty not a favorite subject of mine but I did gain a lot of knowledge in the course. The book is structured in a very logical way and is well written. I personally find the topic a bit dry but the writers make it easy to digest.

Has a lot of useful info, but chapters are too long

I bought this book for a class and it has a lot of useful information. However, since this is not the only class i am taking and since sometimes i have mutltiple chapters to complete in a week, the chapters feel overwhelming and too much to read. Buyers be ready that this is a big heavy book. Don't get me wrong, reading is one of my favorite hobbies, but trying to combine this book's reading with many other tasks is quite difficult. Still, the authors do a good job in having current global situations being illustrated and including interesting facts student can learn from.

The linkages are modeled theoretically in a neo-classical growth theory and empirically measured by sub-contracting arrangements between formal and informal enterprises. In addition, the book also provides implications on promotion of informal sector from the viewpoint of employment generation.

Indrajit Bairagya is currently working as Assistant Professor at Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. Prior to this he was Assistant Professor at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati Campus, India. He has his PhD in Economics from the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, India. He has been awarded the Nancy Richard Ruggles Memorial Prize for the paper ‘Liberalization, Informal Sector and Formal–Informal Sectors’ Relationship: a Study of India’ from the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW). He has publications in various national and international journals including Journal of Developing Areas, Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy and Indian Economic Journal etc.

This book is a practical guide for use by those who design, construct, operate and maintain buildings and walking surfaces in the course of their work of making the environments they are responsible for safer for their intended uses by people. The principles set forth are illustrated by many photos and drawings to show more clearly ideas that may not be so easily understandable in mere words, showing some examples of the best configurations and some of the worst. Some are pictures of actual accident sites where real people were badly injured.
