It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot ...

I bought this book right when it released at midnight and being hard to put down, I read it completely through the night. It was a fairly quick read but very enjoyable. As I recently read my first novel by Gaiman, I was interested in his writing style and intrigued to hear he would be retelling Norse Mythology.

Coming into the book, I only knew the basics of Norse Mythology so I was excited to learn more about it. It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot of care into it. These are stories that have been told over and over again and this is another retelling to pass through the countless generations these stories have survived.

He retells the stories as chronologically as you can, and keeps the story flowing as it jumps around each chapter telling a new story and each story just as interesting as the last. The stories he chose were all fascinating, there wasn't a single one that was boring.

If you want to find out more about Norse Mythology this is definitely a fantastic read and a good place to start.

Have you ever read the Prose Edda or the Poetic Edda? Painful. Gaiman's Norse Mythology is a joy.

Some complain that when compared to Gaiman's other works, Norse Mythology falls a bit flat. The goal of this project was not to tell new stories, but to breath new life into the old stories. Gaiman stays true to the source materials and presents the stories of Thor and Odin and Loki and all of the Norse gods in a language that feels fresh and engaging. I've worked my way through the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and they are anything but an easy read. The prose of a millennia past is something of a hot mess. Gaiman has done all of the painful research for us and given us the old stories gift-wrapped in tight, modern language and a clarity and singular narrative that old Snorri Sturluson was incapable of providing. If you want new and exciting stories about Thor and the gang, pick up a Marvel Comic book or Rick Riodan's Magus Chase series. But if you have a genuine academic interest in the old Norse stories, you'll learn more from spending a day with Gaiman's Norse mythology than you will learn from spending a year sifting through the Prose and Poetic Edda and it will be a hell of a lot more fun.

As someone who had a general knowledge of Norse mythology, I can't say this book breaks any new ground for me, but I still enjoyed it immensely. Its that easy storytelling style that Gaiman does so well that let me breeze through it. He's truly a fantastic storyteller, and this an accessible, fun adaptation of those myths.

How good are you at playing hands that should be folded?

This book was quite instructive, but I found it annoying how many hands I thought should have been folded before the flop, and Stewart agreed with me. Once we get that question right, what is the point in going on with the analysis?

I also found that the games that these hands came from were much more aggressive than the low-limit games that you find online. I don't think that these strategies are completely appropriate for those games. But, if you are playing for thousands at the Grosvenor Victoria, this is your handbook.

Still, in the end, I would say that it improved my game. Plus, there is very little written on the subject of Pot-Limit Omaha, so you are going to end up reading all three of those books, anyway.

A Thinking Man's Book

This book consists of fifty quizzes based on real poker hands. Each of these hands Rueben either participated in or watched happened. For example, Rueben will say he was dealt KKQJ double suited in late position and the book quizzes you a.) fold b.) call c.) min raise d.) pot raise. Next the flop comes T93 rainbow and three players check to you. What do you do, the book asks, a.) check b.) small bet or c.) big bet? And so on until the river. At the end of each hand, Rueben explains what he thinks the correct decision is at each step, his rationale and what really went down. It is up to you to think about whether you agree or disagree with his decision making processes. This book is not a "how to play pot limit omaha" manual for beginners.

For the most part, I disagreed with his style of play. I thought he was overly aggressive. But you have to remember he has made a lot of money playing poker and I have only made a little.

This is still a very good book to learn from but like the highest level books...holdem for advanced players , You MUST determine the intrinsic value of your hand for yourself as you will be the one playing in the casino. So read the quizes and take them for what they are worth. I labeled all the quizzes with a headline at the top after I wrote it. Some read MEANINGLESS ENTRY...nothing to be learned but this was maybe for 2 of the first 10. Take it for what it is worth...if you have the extra 13 bucks and want to improve your game I say go for it.

Very Interesting and Well Written

Having graduated with a math degree, I am, of course biased to this book. To me, it is a refreshing look at the astronomy and the cosmos based upon mathematics and how the subject helped these fields progress.

The author covers all the historic great mathematicians - Newton, Laplace, Gauss, Riemann, etc. and highlights their contributions to our understanding of our solar system and beyond. Further, there is very little need for understanding of advanced mathematics - very few formulas and the ones that he uses are those that we studied in high school. He does review some advanced mathematical theories, especially the ones leading up Einstein's Theory of Relativity, but if you don't fully understand the math, you can still understand the essence of what he is sharing.

Further, I enjoyed his criticisms of the current theories of dark matter, dark energy, multi-universe, string theory. As he states, the math is interesting but the conclusions are faulty. He suggests that physicists have gone down the wrong path to make sure that their formulas work. These theories don't have the right rigor to mathematicians. Rigor is a challenge (as an individual who struggled with Abstract Algebra, I can assure you that), but it can assure that theories are based on a strong foundation.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in mathematics and our universe. It is very interesting and well written.

Superb in all ways

This is not a mathematics book, so the title could probably be better worded. It's primarily a history of astronomical and astrophysical science which describes how certain conclusions were arrived at through calculations. (That mathematics is involved of course isn't news.) The book doesn't get into the calculations themselves, but rather just discusses the results. The book is extremely well written and I highly recommend it for those interested in learning how and why the universe is structured as it is on both the microscopic and macroscopic levels.

Excellent IELTS Band 9 Guide

We do some work with Chinese students abroad who wish to come to the U.S. to participate in exchange programs. Depending on the program, one of the requirements may be that they take and pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. I have taken a look at a lot of study guides and author Karolina Achirri's "ILETS Band 9" is one of the most thorough and complete guides that I found to excelling at this test, particularly for Chinese students. Written from the examiner's perspective, there is some great insight here into the exam and a ton of topics and practice questions. Highly recommended.

This was a high quality IELTS guide for Chinese students, and looking over the material I can see that the subject matter was covered in a relevant and nicely envisioned way. The guides are comprehensive and overall I think they will be of great use to students aiming to take this test. This book is a good review book for neurology residents or those about to enter a neurophysiology fellowship. It is certainly not a reference book (like Neidermeyer's or Pedley's), but provides a well-written introduction to EEG and several characterisitic patterns. The version I own has CD-ROM, which is also helpful.

A numerical coding scheme was designed, in which 26 different variable features were encoded, describing the properties the postmodifying clauses. These were processed and statistically analysed. The book discusses the methodology adopted and the results of the statistical analyses. Among the properties described are the function of NPs with postmodifying clauses, the structure of these NPs, the realisation and reference of the heads of these NPs, the specific types of postmodifying clause, the actual link words used, the clause patterns occurring in the postmodifying clauses, and the verb phrases in the postmodifying clauses.

Power Writing, Power Reporting, Power Insights

Sure there is plenty of powerful content to praise, but first I want to celebrate author Lisa Belkin's fabulous writing style. She sure knows how to tell a gripping and compelling story. In the tradition of nonfiction writers who write like novelists such as Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air) and Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down) Belkin fuses top-notch reporting with authentic protagonist voices, brilliant insights, and the ability to surface root causes, map out trends, and distill the core philosophical issues at stake.

Belkin applies these gifts to telling the story of the most wrenching life and death ethical dilemmas staff, doctors, nurses, and family members face at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Amazing advances in medical technology have forced all of us to confront questions never before encountered: when do we stop trying to keep someone alive? what is the definition of quality of life? who gets to decide -- the doctors or the family members? what is the difference between the law, ethics, and morals? how to best live with the decision once it's made?

It takes courage to delve into these questions and to bear the responsibility for them as the ethics committee does at Hermann. It also took a great amount of bravery to offer journalist Belkin unrestricted access to the inner workings of the hospital and the committee. The result is a significantly important book that contributes in vital ways to the ongoing conversations we need to be having in society and among our families as technology puts us more in the position of having to make god-like decisions.

Highly recommend it

As a nurse these are issues we deal with all the time and then ask if we helped patients and their family's make the right decision. This certainly showed the ramifications of those decisions. WOW very thought provoking. Should be required reading for all med students and nurses. Highly recommend it

Read This PRIOR to Commenting on the Health Care Insurance Debate

First, Do No Harm. Here we are, in August 2009, with a very heated battle going on in regards to the health insurance battle. People are worried about death panels, Nazi health care (we will be treating Nazis?), and a number of hysterical assumptions. Guess what! Death panels have existed under other names, or perhaps no names at all. Some hospitals call them Ethics Committees, when they are named. But if you are ever involved with the long-term care of someone who is critically ill, a birth defect, or a severe car accident, YOU become part of a death panel, like it or not. Through describing the life & death situations of a variety of patients, author Lisa Belkin educates us in an area a lot of what we don't want to admit to: we will all die, and someone other than ourselves could be making that decision as to when.
