Recipes Look Good, But Meal Plans Are Very Skimpy.

Part One of the book explains the diet, and it is very repetitive. Lists foods of the Mediterranean diet over and over. Says that couscous is a whole grain. The 4 week plans are extremely skimpy...barley porridge for breakfast (looks pretty good, with fruits and nuts, but calls for almond milk, not a traditional mediterranean beverage), cucumber and yogurt salad for lunch (the only protein comes from a measly 2 ounce portion of the yogurt), and beef patties (with spices) for supper, no mention of any vegetables or side dishes to go with this. A few snacks are suggested, yogurt and fruit, raw vegetables, crackers, and the ubiquitous kale chips. Meal plans seem very low in protein, and as written, would be hard to stick to. I think you would starve. Recipes look good, though.

Susan did it again! This book is a great resource filled with recipes for any one from the novice to the expert cook. I love how it is based on her background and childhood experiences, and that she is registered dietitian! Mediterranean diet is a great way for any one to develop a healthy lifestyle which is the key to living a long healthy life. Forget those fad unrealistic diets and try this book- you won't be sorry!

Charming, Witty, Quirky and Funny

I love Eliza Gordon. Her romances are quirky and full of humor. They are great reads to put a smile on my face. Must Love Otters was one of my surprise favorites of 2013, so I was super excited to read Neurotica. And while the story was completely different, there was still that same brand of charm and humor that I have come to love about Eliza's writing. Neurotica is the story of a Jayne. The story starts out with Jayne in her therapists' office, where we got a pretty good idea of some of her Neuroses. Jayne is afraid of intimacy. I really respected her for seeing a therapist, and I loved that her therapist suggested that Jayne write some erotica help her with her visualization and to get her more comfortable with the idea of S-E-X. Now, I feel like I should say that even though a main part of this book centers around the idea that Jayne is afraid of sex and the fact that she writes and later publishes her erotica novels, that Neurotica is actually a clean book. It is adult, but there are no graphic scenes, and it would actually work as new adult because the main characters are 26 or so.

Neurotica has a great cast of characters. I really enjoyed them all. There was Luke, the owner of the Piewalkers food truck. I have a love of foodtrucks and of witty names, so this one was right up my alley. I would track this truck down across the nation if it was real. Just sayin'. Then you have the best friend Gretchen, who was always there for Jayne, sometimes in a tough love kind of not so gentle pushing way, but that was just Gretchen. She really cared for Jayne and wanted the best for her. I actually really liked their dynamic. And then there is Holden. While I really did like Luke, I also really liked Holden. I thought he was beyond adorable. No more information on that. Read the book people!

Jayne really wants to be a writer. She wrote the obits and sale notices at her job (while she was working there) and she was forever trying to pitch them on all kinds of articles. I admired her tenacity at work. They totally didn't deserve her there. In her spare time she wrote science fiction and fantasy books, and throughout Neurotica we got to see chapters of her books written under her pen name. I really would have preferred to see some erotica chapters as the story went on and Jayne made some character growth progress on that front, but we only saw her fantasy book. I was so wrapped up in the story of Jayne that stopping that to read the excerpts from the book were sometimes a bit of a drag for me. I caught myself starting to skim some of them.

Neurotica is so much fun to read. I loved all the dorkdom and star wars references. Eliza Gordon is great with her word choice and one liners to advance the humor of the book. She not only has the overly funny in your face humor aspect down, but also the subtle wit form of humor in spades. Reading her books is like reading a finely tuned work of art. I really love her writing. The ending did leave me wanting more though. Add another chapter or two Mr. Gordon. Please! Neurotica was a great read.

Absolute Must Read Book!!!

Jayne Dandy is not you ordinary girl. She has problems unlike most people. When she loses her job, she turns to her journals and publishes them. Little does she know, these journals turn out to be a hit. What does this cost her? Because what is in these journals is something she is afraid that everyone she knows will make fun of her. Jayne is your top of the line nerd geek to the core. She doesn't care about fashion or much anything else but she loves to write and loves her ducks. She also loves the food from her friend Luke's food truck. Luke helps her out by giving her a job on this food truck. His crazy ex-girlfriend doesn't like this one bit. Jayne has caught the eye of a guy from her previous job. All this sets up for a major disaster and can any of these find what they are looking for and happiness. Will those journals make it hard for Jayne to go forward or will it cost her everything? This book has so much going own that you will not be able to put it down. I love everything about it, from the way it is written, to the storyline and its many twist and turns. This book is different from the author's first book but I think I love it as much or maybe even more. This is a must read now book. Don't just put it on your long to be read list because it is that good. The wittiness of the storyline is incredible. I want more of these characters when I finished the book because I didn't want it to end. Loved every word of this book! This author is amazingly brilliant.

Now, if you pay attention at all to my reading habits and opinions then you know that I like things real and dirty. I read to escape so my reading time is very precious to me and I can be quite selective in what I choose to read. Eliza Gordon earned my respect and attention with her novel, Must Love Otters, but Neurotica is now on my all-time favorites list of books. That says A LOT about the quality of the writing and story found within Neurotica. I’ve had some really good reads lately but this book made my soul happy. It’s smart and funny. The characters are so real and quirky. The banter between the characters (any of them) was witty and intelligent; and the pacing was perfect.
The whole book was a giant amalgam of perfect for me. SO perfect that I found myself cursing my bladder, my children and the clock and its forward momentum for taking me away from my reading. The story was a brilliantly written tale of a woman with intimacy issues and her attempts to be “normal”. Her therapist gives her advice and her best friend, Gretchen, is always there to push her out of her comfort zone and back her up. Jayne was delightful in her neuroses and her internal monologues had me snort laughing and sighing because at the heart of Neurotica is a very simple yet very hard to accept message- the importance of being true to yourself.
For those of you asking, “How hot was this book?” Barely a simmer, but that’s exactly what the story needed. A single sex scene in this book would have destroyed the simple message and would have cheapened the beauty of Jayne’s realizations and the events that occur. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t swoon and fall in love with a certain Pie-man because I was crushing and falling the whole time. I would tell you more, but I never spoil the good stuff. Just trust me and my happy soul that this is a worthy book. And really, you get a story within a story since the chapters are mixed with chapters from one of Jayne’s stories so it’s a win-win all around.

What an excellent book!! This book can be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone who is looking for improvement in his or her social life. The author provides a treasure-trove of solid, no-nonsense advice on how to improve the "quantity and quality" of one's social circle and how to rise into the higher echelons of society in any city or country. Jen goes into very minute details on how to dress, how to groom yourself, how to act in social settings, but most importantly, how to treat other people with grace, generosity and kindness.

I've been following the life of this amazing woman, Jen Su, for the last 15 years or so, and she has been through so much in her international life. The general reader can learn a lot from her wisdom and worldwide experience.

True to form, this offers a judicious overview of the calendar and the general characteristics and essentials of Paganism as the Higginbothams see it interconnectedness and blessedness. To their credit, though, the authors have crafted a very different kind of book, one of great spiritual depth that could be of genuine and lasting service to anyone who is interested in sorting out the whats and whys of belief. Early on, they outline the "big tent" of Paganism that shelters a dozen or more passageways (Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, Santer�a, etc.), comparing it to Christianity and its popular denominations (Methodist, Roman Catholic, etc.). Throughout, they employ calm and rational prose that seeks not to proselytize as much as to aid discernment, making good on the authors' claim that, "Whether or not you decide to be a Pagan once you finish [the book] is not as important as providing you with tools to help you identify your values and goals." The seven chapters are nicely paced with illustrations, diagrams, visualization exercises, discussion points and journal prompts, all of which can be used by individuals or groups. The authors tackle the charge of Satanism head-on with success, but even more progressively (and clearly) they weave new discoveries in physics into the life fabric of belief and action. The final chapter explores ethics, and similar to the others, serves the broadest common good.

One of the Finest New Books On Paganism

As a veteran Witch who has been practicing for over twenty years, the new arrivals on the metaphysical shelves of the bookstores have been, of late, a disappointment. I find most shelves stocked with book upon book of superstitious claptrap, mechanistic models of magick and cookbook-style spellbooks which lower Neo-Paganism, Wicca and Witchcraft to the lowest common denominator.
However, when I picked up this book, I was pleasantly surprised, then delighted, to find that the authors wrote with calm, unemotional prose, with nary a foolishly rhymed spell in sight. Mature, insightful thought is the rule of the day in this book, something that I deeply appreciate, and the authors to go great lengths to anticipate and answer the many "whys" of Neo-Paganism in clear prose that neither talks down to the reader, nor dumbs down the topic.
The topics that are covered include discussions of beliefs about Divinity and the nature of Divinity itself, a cosmology that includes the "New Physics", and a discussion of how magick works. All of these topics are covered thoroughly, intelligently, and ethically, with a no-nonsense view towards helping the reader come to their own conclusions on the subject matter. The "Satan" issue is covered with a thoroughness that surprised me, and included information that I have never seen portrayed in a Neo-Pagan work before.
My only complaint is that the section on ethics was shorter than it could have been. I am one of those Witches who upsets people at Pagan festivals with my view that we need to talk about ethics at any opportunity and work at creating an ethical system that helps the incoming flux of new Pagans understand the behaviors our community does and does not promote. One of the reasons I am so adamant about ethics is because unlike Christianity, which is the religion most Pagans convert from, Paganism doesn't have a lot of do's and don'ts. That is a good thing, however, people who grew up with a lot of rules are not used to thinking for themselves, and often, simply -don't- think. They often wind up hurting themselves and others and hide behind the belief that they are "doing what they will, and harming none." A bit more discussion on exactly what "harm" means, and how to interpret the Rede more effectively would help people who are used to being told what to do learn to make good decisions themselves.
Other than that one minor quibble, I would say that this is one of the least shallow beginner books on Neo-Paganism that I have read, and is certainly a book that I can wholeheartedly recommend to everyone, not just beginners. I hope that it becomes as influential as Starhawk's "The Spiral Dance," because it deserves to be that widely read.

A well-written primer

Maybe it's just my love for knowledge and workbook style books, but this book made a huge impression on me.
The knowledge is straightforward and addresses two sides of every issue - IE in the Witchcraft v. Satanism issue. They don't simply say, "We don't worship Satan and anyone who says so is a Bible-Beating moron." They present a specific case where they had a conversation with a "fundamentalist," how they resolved it, and used that as a catalyst for their discussion in the book.
I also found that the exercises and journal entries were particularly helpful. Sure, it may be a little "school-ish," but I really enjoy books like that (I always have). Having something in the book that made me THINK about the information I had just learned instead of just memorizing it was very helpful.
I really enjoyed working through this book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Paganism, whether they're following the path or just curious about it.

THE Best Book I've Read to Date on Paganism...

There seem to be two types of books in the Paganism 101 level--those that emphasize giving you rituals you can do for every conceivable scenario, and those that seek to make your level of understanding of what it means to be Pagan, better. This is the type that brings you understanding and it's the type I prefer. In my mind, rituals are a personal process we must go through--pulling one from a book is a cop-out on that process. That being said, this book is amazing. It breaks down Paganism into its sub-genres (Wicca, Druidry, Shamanism, etc.) and then fits them back into the whole. It gives you exercises to heighten your awareness and asks the good questions that will help you, as a practioner, define for yourself what it means to be a Pagan. It helps you discover what YOUR beliefs are about the Divine, Magick, and the host of other terms bantered about in the Craft on a daily basis. I think this is the best Pagan Book I've ever read and I've been reading them going on 10+ years now. It's one of those books that changes as you do--you'll be able to read it 5 years later and rediscover how your views have changed and it will be just as valuable then. As High Priest of a local coven, this is must read material in my eyes....
