Through their work, messengers help to reproduce and maintain the structures of society while also constructing a vibrant, rebellious, politicized subculture that has come to represent the new urban hipster, an image continually under threat of co-optation.

Wehr's Hermes on Two Wheels examines an interesting social phenomenon closely in order to derive insights about the contradictions and challenges of our accelerated era of laptop capitalism. He shows that the Internet-driven post-Fordist era cannot dispense with actual people, who dodge traffic in order to deliver important pulp documents on time. In this, he brilliantly opposes technological optimism, which assumes that utopia is a chatroom. Bicycle messengers, an edgy crew, live on the edges of our fast society and help us see it more clearly. This book is very much in the tradition of Walter Benjamin's study of the Paris Arcades project. Like Benjamin, Wehr examines fragments―tea leaves, as it were―as the resources of a critical social and cultural theory. (Dr. Ben Agger, University of Texas at Arlington.)
About the Author
Kevin Wehr is associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the California State University, Sacramento, where he specializes in environmental sociology, political sociology, social theory, culture, and criminology. He received his Ph.D. in sociology in 2002 and his M.S. in 1998 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He completed his B.A. in 1994 at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Messenger Culture for the Thinking Man

Book Review: Hermes on Two Wheels
I loved this book. It does not glorify messenger sub-culture. There are no photographs. No stories of desperation from a dark and gritty urban underground. This book is a sociological analysis of what forces in society produce messenger culture. It follows in the tradition of investigating counter-cultural sub-groups like beatniks, hippies and punks as a way to study the larger society. Ever wondered what forces make bike messengers popular? What is it about their distant detachment as a product of the post-punk culture of lost identity and alienation that people find so attractive? After all, few want to actually be a messenger. The wages are crazy low and it is scary dangerous. Rather than exploiting messenger culture (the proceeds of this book go to the Bike Messenger Emergency Fund), this book tries to explain (there are six pages of references) messenger culture as a island of lost humanity on a sea of meaninglessness and alienation driving a sense of ever-increasing hopelessness and emptiness. Messengers are described as alternating between serving the corporations they deliver for and fighting being co-opted by corporations. The last chapter is titled "The Last Non Co-Opted Punk Rock Subculture".

i found this book a little too academic and not super interesting, although this is not entirely the fault of the book because i realized that it was a sociological study, and after reading the book i realized that what i would like to see in the canon of messenger literature would be a compilation of stories and encounters written by messengers in different cities. This book was well written but not super revealing or insightful.
